Sweeney Todd the movie

Sunday 11 February 2007

News reaches the Whingers that filming started this week on Tim Burton’s film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd starring those well known doyennes of musical theatre Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett.

The cast also includes Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin, Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G and Borat) as Signor Adolfo Pirelli and Timothy Spall as Beadle Bamford. Christopher Lee, Peter Bowles, and Anthony Head are rumoured to be appearing as ghosts in the film.

As one wag on the Stephen Sondheim Society discussion board puts it: “The cast list is beginning to read like a Harry Potter film.”

The only musical name to feature is Laura Michelle Kelly (who created the stage musical role of Mary Poppins) as the Beggar Woman

The whingers think Marni Nixon is going to have her work cut out for her on this one*.

* Nixon dubbed the singing voices of Deborah Kerr in The King and I, Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady
