The Whingers often think about Hair.
Not the iconic musical of the sixties but the stuff that is prone to sprout from the head and face and other places the Whingers are too polite to mention (nose and ears in Andrew’s case).
But actor/singer Michael Ball has been seen out and about recently – including at the opening of The Drowsy Chaperone and presenting This Morning (right) – sporting a glorious beard.
Apparently he’s grown a full set for the upcoming ENO production of Kismet thus keeping costs down for the wig department. But the Whingers feel that hair if not just on his chin, must be very much on Mr Ball’s mind at the moment.
The Whingers experienced the joyous performance of Harvey Fierstein in the Broadway production of Hairspray and having speculated for months on who could possibly fill those heels in the London version they were alarmed (to say the least) to hear that Mr Ball would be dragging up for the role of Edna Turnblad.
Now the Whingers appreciate Mr Ball has a tremendous set of lungs but ,whilst personable enough, does he have the comedic nuance for such a role? Let’s just say they didn’t exactly rush off to the Shaftesbury Theatre box-office (mind you, nobody ever does) on hearing the news.
Presumably by then he’ll have shaved off the beard and grown his very own fulsome beehive? Whilst the Whingers aren’t tickled by this unexpected casting news they do wonder whether Ball’s companion Cathy McGowan is tickled by the beard or the bee-hive.
If you’re not tickled by either can we again draw your attention to Michael Ball’s wonderful website and fabulous merchandise? It’s a long way to Christmas but friends of Andrew should note he’s showing more than a little interest in the set of six cork backed Michael Ball coasters.
He’s also quite taken by the Michael Ball car tax disc holder and he doesn’t even have a car. Pathetic

Hey
Kismet didn’t get rave reviews by Michael Ball is getting good ones. Esp for his comedic timing. So he just might be perfect for Edna

Edna coasters pehaps? Andrew would splash out for those.

Having seen Mr Ball in Women in White and Kismet recently, I think he will be amazing in this role. He is never better than when he has plenty of character to draw on and a story tell and Edna will give him both of these things.
