Review – Dick Whittington and his cat, Hackney Empire

Sunday 23 December 2007

Like everything Christmas-related, it’s easy to overdo panto; one more spoonful of sprouts, the second bowl of trifle; the 87th coloured tinsel on the Christmas Tree. Dick Whittington at the Hackney Empire was the Whingers’ third panto and to be honest, they were getting a bit over-tired and fractious.

Worse still, Phil had come down with an extreme case of man flu and only dragged himself down to the Hackney Empire because he was the one who had the tickets. Read the rest of this entry »

Review – Jack and the Beanstalk, Barbican

Saturday 15 December 2007

If the West End Whingers were to write a panto, it would probably be something like this. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

Somehow Phil had managed to get out of seeing Jack and the Beanstalk at The Barbican.

You might think that rather strange, as its writer – Jonathan Harvey – is actually one of Phil’s Facebook “friends”.

Andrew, meanwhile, gets to spend many gleeful hours looking out for who’s appearing in what in pantoland. Read the rest of this entry »

The theatrical event of the whinging year

Saturday 21 April 2007

InvitationWell, it’s all go at the Whingers’ respective headquarters in Kentish Town and Vauxhall as preparations for tonight’s party go into overdrive.  Moods are rather fractious as it’s 10.15am and in deference to their duties this evening neither Phil nor Andrew has had a drink all day. Review – Dick Whittington and his Cat, The Barbican

Saturday 2 December 2006

dickcartoon.gifIt must have seemed like a great idea at the time – secure controversial playwright Mark Ravenhill to write the Barbican’s Christmas panto, Dick Whittington and his Cat.
But what a nightmare for the Barbican’s marketing department which is now faced with the task of persuading the public that this output from the man whose most famous play is called Shopping and Fucking is suitable family fare.
