Review – Bob Downe: 20 Golden Greats, Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh Fringe

Saturday 13 August 2011

We just weren’t sure whether this was a good idea or not. We remember Mr Downe from the 1980s but couldn’t quite imagine the persona of the polyester-prone Australian lounge singer could stretch to an hour.

But we had underestimated the elasticity of synthetic fabrics and the result was a good-natured, highly amusing 60 minutes of singing, audience banter, competitions and a howlingly funny series of Bob Downe greetings cards, the last of which will cause the Whingers to burst out laughing on hearing the words “Chris Tarrant” for many years to come.

It was Andrew’s time to take the limelight as he won a Bob Downe DVD for knowing what film featured the song “Love Is In The Air”. So all rather satisfactory.

Like the rest of the audience the Whingers found themselves quite carried away with Mr Downe and his infectious enthusiasm.

Highly enjoyable.
